Copyright and Copyrighting

Copyright and Copyrighting, not to be confused with copywriting, is a legal term that gives the creator or owner of an original piece of work exclusive rights to publish that work or use it as they see fit, quite literally giving owners the ‘right to copy' the work. Being the holder of the copyright to a work gives one the right to be credited for it, make money from it, allow specific people or organisations to use it and prevent others from using it.

Copyright is an Intellectual Property, which means it is given to creators of works of the mind such as writing, software, music, artwork and logos etc.

Copyrights And Your Website

In the UK any text or images that are created by you, or for you, and published to your website or printed are automatically protected by copyright. You will see that most websites have a copyright statement at the bottom, but unique text published on a website is protected under copyright whether the statement is there or not.

Who Owns Your Website Design?

Most professional websites will have a ‘Designed by' at the bottom, for instance Website Design York Interweb in the case of our websites, but the copyright to the design is owned by whoever commissions and pays for it. So, once your website design is paid for, all of its content, text and images etc, belong to you and/or your business and you have full rights to do with them as you please.
